| Background: | Eastman Lake lies within the dividing line of valley grasslands and the rolling foothills leading into the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. It serves as an excellent resting site for migratory birds and supports a diverse population of native flora and fauna. | ||
| Uplifted tombstone rocks and granite outcroppings are some geologic features found at this location. Camping, picnicking, and boating facilities are present as well as multiuse trails. | |||
| The Habitat: | Oak woodland savanna (80%) Riparian cooridors along Chowchilla River (20%) | ||
| The Experience: | Excellent representation of Central Valley ecology with a quiet, far from civilization feel even though it is only about 25 miles from the town of Chowchilla. | ||
| Wildlife and Where to Find It: | Car, camping, picnicking facilities, trails (Lakeview Trail: 4 miles) and boating | ||
| Viewing Tips: | Waterfowl - Fall & Winter. Songbirds and bald eagles - year-round. Fall - tarantula migration signifies mating season. Camping is excellent in the Spring and Fall, while boating is great during the Summer. | ||
| Site Notes: | This oak-studded foothill reservoir is the Central Valley's southernmost nesting habitat for bald eagles. Abundant rodents attract golden eagles, sharp-shinned hawks, American kestrels, long-eared owls, and screech owls. Resident pied-billed grebes, common mergansers, and cinnamon teal are joined by greater white fronted geese, Canada geese, and other migratory species. A small flock of American white pelicans visit throughout the year. Look for great egrets, great blue herons, and western meadowlarks, western kingbirds, California quail and many species of woodpeckers, towhees, sparrows and wrens. Black-tailed deer, bobcats and coyotes are common year-round. | ||

| How to Get There: | From Chowchilla, CA: From CA-Hwy 99 take the Avenue 26 (Robertson Blvd.) Exit east for 12 miles on Avenue 26, Turn left (north) on Road 29 for 8 miles, Road 29 ends at the Eastman Lake Park Entrance. From Madera, CA: From CA-Hwy 99 take the Gateway Exit, Turn east at stop light, Cross Gateway and merge left onto Road 26 for 10 miles, Turn right (east) on Ave 26 for 4 miles, Turn left (north) on Road 29 for 8 miles, Road 29 ends at the Eastman Lake Park entrance. Visitors south of Madera, please call for directions. | ||
